Which should you choose? Tips from our dietitian

Although taste preference can – and should! – contribute to the whey protein powder you choose, your health goals and dietary needs should also come into consideration.

Here are some insights from registered dietitian Ro Huntriss, which might help guide your decision:

Fibre

Dietary fibre is important for a number of health reasons, from maintaining regular bowel movements (1) to supporting gut health. (2) While wholefood fibre sources are best, the 2.8g of fibre per serving in Cacao & Maca can help contribute to your adult dietary reference value of 30g.

Salt

High salt intakes are associated with adverse health effects, such as high blood pressure, and reducing salt intake may improve health outcomes. (3) For a flavour that is particularly low in salt, you might opt for Banana & Lucuma.

BCAAs

Some studies have found that supplementation of BCAAs in conjunction with Vitamin D in sarcopenic older adults could help improve measures of strength. (4) With this in mind, you might opt for Pure Unflavoured, which has the highest proportion of leucine, isoleucine, and valine compared to other flavours.

Calcium

Calcium is needed for muscular contraction and also helps maintain normal bone mineral density. (5) It can be particularly important for postmenopausal women, as bone mineral density declines during menopause. (6,7)

Being derived from milk, all options contain calcium, but particularly Banana & Lucuma.

Iron

Iron supports brain function and reduces fatigue, as well as supporting red blood cell production. (8,9,10,11) Having iron sources in your diet is especially important for menstruating or pregnant women, as well as people following a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Cacao & Maca contains over 15% of the dietary reference value of iron, a significantly higher proportion than other flavours.

Tryptophan

As a precursor to serotonin (12), tryptophan is often cited for supporting mood and sleep. Although there is no dietary reference value in the UK, Pure Unflavoured contains the highest proportion of this amino acid.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is important for normal energy production and reducing tiredness and fatigue. (13,14) It’s found naturally only in animal-based foods, making it a necessary supplement for vegans and often vegetarians.

At 1.7mcg of vitamin B12 per serving, Cookies & Cream offers the highest proportion across all flavours, with 113% of your dietary reference value.
