What’s New in Minimally Formulated Protein Powders Without Artificial Sweeteners?

The Organic Protein Company

Consumers are paying closer attention to ingredients lists than ever before. More brands are recognising that customers want transparency and simplicity, not lengthy lists of unrecognisable stabilisers and sweeteners.

While the good news is that the market is shifting towards simplicity, we’re proud that at The Organic Protein Co., we have always crafted organic whey protein made with real ingredients and zero additives.

The Rise of Stripped-Back Formulations

Many protein powders are formulated with ingredients that improve texture, sweetness, flavour or shelf life. However, there’s growing demand for the protein itself to take centre stage.

Rather than trying to recreate the taste and texture of a milkshake, we choose to use only real foods for a natural, creamy taste and a shorter ingredients list.

More people are reading labels carefully and asking whether every ingredient or additive in a protein powder is really necessary. This shift towards minimal-ingredient products reflects a broader consumer interest in ingredient transparency.

What “Minimally Formulated” Means

Minimally formulated does not necessarily mean the powder has undergone less processing. All whey protein concentrate is produced through a manufacturing process and is classified as a NOVA Group 4 ultra-processed food (UPF).

Instead, the term refers to the final formulation, with a short ingredients list including only foods that are needed to create the finished product. In our range of organic whey proteins, Pure Unflavoured contains only whey protein concentrate, while our blends contain organic vanilla, cacao and other real ingredients. No guar gum. No soy lecithin. No artificial flavourings.

The focus is on using high-quality ingredients to avoid the need for additives to adjust taste or texture.

How This Impacts Digestive Health

Some people find that protein powders with shorter ingredients lists suit them better. If you experience bloating or digestive discomfort after using protein powder, this might be related to any artificial additives contained within it.

A simpler ingredients list can make it easier to identify whether a particular ingredient agrees with you, especially if you’re trying to work out what’s triggering symptoms.

At The Organic Protein Co., we focus on keeping our formulations as simple as possible. All whey protein powders are classified as Nova Group 4, so none can be classed as UPF-free. However, our whey protein is cold filtered to preserve the natural structure of the protein, with no harsh processing methods such as high heat or chemicals. We are committed to making protein powders with minimal ingredients, gentle methods, and none of the additives most associated with UPF concerns.
